A Q&A with Alex Waleczek, Davanti's resident Tableau expert

27th January 2021

Author Alex Waleczek

We’re really excited to welcome Alex to the Davanti team. Alex brings a wealth of experience and expertise in data and analytics and is a Tableau trainer who’s also at the helm of the Auckland Tableau User Group (and as an added bonus, it turns out he’s also a gun with data sets and LEGO…).

Tell us a bit about your role.

In my role I’m focused on building Davanti’s dedicated Analytics practice. Davanti currently has data and analytics skills and experience right throughout the business and now we’re looking to take it to the next level by growing a dedicated data and analytics function. My role is to build upon the existing skills and capability within the business, to develop and grow these further, and to build a focused team that can help our customers to find, manage and analyse their data.

Tell us about yourself…

I’ve always been a data guy. As a kid I would chart my pocket money in a line chart – little did I know that this would become my actual profession! I spent some time studying IT and business in Germany, and worked in entry-level jobs in IT support, project management and development before I made the move to New Zealand. Here in New Zealand, I started out with the only Tableau partner in Auckland at the time, not knowing what Tableau was. I immediately enjoyed working with Tableau and started using it recreationally, visualising data sets that I found interesting in my spare time.

Over time, I became more proficient and got more exposure to customers’ business problems, developing analytics solutions from data acquisition through ETL pipelines and database development to business dashboards which were used by analysts and executives alike.

I became one of the few certified Tableau trainers in New Zealand and started leading the Auckland Tableau User Group.

For the last two years I worked as a Senior Solutions Consultant for Corelogic, where I utilised their wealth of property data to deliver analytics solutions for New Zealand’s large banks, helping organise and standardise data and training people in-house in the use of data visualisation in general and Tableau in particular.

Now, I am really excited to be back with a Tableau partner to do more of what I am passionate about: teaching people the value of data and helping them to find the hidden insights through data visualisation. I love teaching people to work with data and seeing them finding answers in minutes when it might have taken them hours previously, especially if they don’t have a technical background. I’m really looking forward to enabling our customers to use data and analytics to get to know their customers even better.

What brought you to Davanti and what are you most looking forward to in your new role?

Davanti is a unique business in New Zealand in that it is the biggest Salesforce partner and has made a commitment to become a strong Tableau partner as well. These two platforms are hugely powerful when it comes to data and analytics and the combination of the two within one partner doesn’t exist anywhere else in New Zealand.

I am looking forward to building a strong analytics practice, utilising the resources and knowledge Davanti already has in the data space and growing a team of analytics experts that is known across the country for their excellent work and expertise.

When you’re not busy helping Davanti’s customers get closer to their customers, how do you spend your time?

I work with data in my spare time. For example, last year over lockdown I built a three-dimensional elevation map of New Zealand out of 3600 LEGO bricks (if you’re interested you can read more about this here).

On a less nerdy level, I am an enthusiastic woodworker and build beds, tables, toys, etc – and I’m quite proud of my handiwork. My partner and I used to do a lot of hiking throughout the country, from overnight tramps to five- to nine-day tracks through various national parks. At the moment this is scaled down to short walks and camping trips since our 10-month-old probably won’t do anything like that for a while, but we hope to pick it up again soon!
